A hurricane is a storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean. Hurricane season starts on June 1st and ends on November 30th. The most active time for a hurricane is mid-August through mid-October. New Jersey has been a target of hurricanes in the past 3 years. Since 2010, there have been three hurricanes that New Jersey has faced. The most devastating hurricane was hurricane Sandy. Other significant hurricanes include Irene and Earl.

  • Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey on October 29, 2012. New Jersey rarely gets hit with hurricanes, but Sandy made history as one of the most devastating storms. Sandy was listed as a category 3 hurricane, it is said to be the biggest Atlantic storm in history. It had winds up to 115 mph which led to major flooding, fallen trees on buildings, houses and cars. Sandy also caused major power outages causing victims to not have power for days or even weeks. Over 50 people died in this tragedy and more than 500 buildings were destroyed outright. More than 5,000 structures suffered major damage and 24,000 were faced with minor damage. The famous New Jersey boardwalks were damaged and completely destroyed, even leaving an amusement ride in the middle of the ocean.

  • Hurricane Irene hit New Jersey on August 28, 2011. Irene is the seventh costliest hurricane in United States history. Irene originally made landfall in North Carolina but re-emerged in the Atlantic and made a second landfall in New Jersey with 75 mph winds. Irene also caused major flooding, and homes and buildings were damaged by trees. Almost 800,000 people lost power throughout the hurricane.

  • Hurricane Earl also hit New Jersey on September 3, 2010. Hurricane Earl was a category 1 hurricane. It wasn't as dangerous as Irene or Sandy but it did produce wind and flooding. Earl had winds up to 130 mph, which also caused a lot of building, homes, and cars to be damaged. Power was lost and lives of loved ones.
